These homemade pizzas are super quick to make, budget-friendly, and taste like the real thing. Have you ever toasted pitta bread and thought “mmh, it smells like pizza”? Well now you can have one.

Budget-friendly Homemade pizza

Having pizza for dinner is such an easy way to please your family. Everybody loves pizza right? But when you order in, or go out for pizza, the money starts adding in. And you end up paying a lot of money for dough, tomato sauce and toppings.

Don’t get me wrong, I do love to go out or order a real pizza from time to time. But being able to make a very similar thing for little money is also a joy. I usually am able to make mine for as little at £5, so when you see that you need at least £15 nowadays for a decent pizza, it’s a bargain.

Your budget will vary depending on what you want to put on your pizza of course. As long as you’re not going for caviar or lobster, I think you’re good.

Pizza and Toppings

I started with pitta bread when I made homemade pizza, but now that I live in France, I can also go to the bakery and ask for a non-cooked baguette. If ever you have a bakery that does French sticks near you, don’t hesitate to ask, you get enough for one real-size pizza.

Now, we can’t talk about pizza and not discuss what actually goes ON the pizza.

Always start with a nice Passata or tomato sauce, really cheap in the shop, and does the job for the base. I add vegetables like mushrooms, sliced bell pepper, courgette, cherry tomatoes or marinated artichokes.

For the protein we can add mozzarella cheese or shredded cheese – I usually go for vegan cheese from Violife, I love it. I also like slices of Prosciutto ham on a pizza for that smokey flavour.

You can add an egg in the middle of your pizza. I know it’s controversial, but when it’s well cooked, it’s delicious and nutritious.

Method

Preheat your oven to 180*.

Cut your pitta bread open, so you have two sides = two pizzas. Depending on the size of your pitta bread, you will have small or big pizzas. Or if you went for the bread dough from the bakery, roll out the dough in a round shape.

Spread the passata all over the inside side of your pitta, or on the dough, add a pinch of salt. Put some shredded cheese or Mozzarella on top of the passata. Place your vegetables evenly on the pizza, add your protein and / or cover in cheese.

Bake the pizzas in the oven for 12 minutes, or more if they’re not fully cooked yet. I like mine to be well cooked. Add a sprig of basil or some rocket to decorate, and it’s ready.

Enjoy 😉
